From Candidate to Client – Residential Property Manager at FV by Peppers – Maria Salazar

Tell us a bit about yourself, and how you became connected to Majer.

My name is Maria, I am from Colombia and I have been in Australia for 11 years. I studied a double degree of International Business and Hotel Management at Griffith University.

In August last year I was looking for a new career challenge. I loved every minute of my previous Hotel Management position, but I knew it was time to continue with my career progression. Nia from Majer contacted me through Linkedin in regards to a position available – Residential Property Manager for FV by Peppers Residences – and she encouraged me to apply.

I was a bit hesitant, as I love short term accommodation, however I was looking to improve my skillset. The thought of managing Permanent Rentals for one of the largest residential buildings in Brisbane was definitely something that inspired and challenged me.

After multiple interviews I was appointed for the position! I can honestly say in the last 8 months I have learned so many things about myself, management and the industry. It has been very challenging at times, but also a great opportunity for my career development.

We hear that you have a promotion on the horizon. Can you tell us more?

I was recently offered the position of General Manager for a Mantra Hotel – within the Peppers Group – which really shows how career progression can happen quickly when you have the right mindset. (This is currently on hold due to the COVID-19, but I cannot wait to get started). I want to thank Nia for believing in me and recommending for this position.

I have always been passionate about the hospitality industry and customer service, I believe in developing connections rather than providing a script interaction – simple but very hard to find.  My career dream was always to be a General Manager of a Hotel.

In the light of Covid-19, what do you identify as two positives that get you through each day?

I feel grateful for everything I have. And in my current situation, I feel privileged to be working and to be considered part of a critical team.

What is the best career advice you have received?

There are always opportunities for those who look.
