How to leverage the holidays for a successful job hunt

We understand that job hunting is mentally exhausting and not to mention time-consuming.

With summer activities and the holidays just around the corner, it can be tempting to put the job hunt on hold until the new year— we urge you to keep your efforts high!

There are fewer applicants this time of year, yet hiring takes place all year round. If a company needs a new hire, they won’t waste a minute to fill the position.

To be clear, we’re not recommending you deprive yourself of the fun activities this season has to offer. Instead, leverage this season to help you make the most out of your job hunt with these insider tips.

Tip 1: Attend Holiday Events

End of year celebrations and holiday functions are excellent networking opportunities to connect with people who can help you with your job search.

Half of the battle is committing to these events, but it’s definitely worth the effort. If you need a 101 on networking skills for your next holiday event, we’ve got you covered!

Tip 2: Send holiday greeting cards

We’re big fans of hand-written notes. They’re a small gesture, but a memorable one because we come across so few nowadays.

A holiday greeting card is an excellent opportunity to reconnect with past contacts and recruiters you’ve worked with before.

Your greeting card could include:

  • An invite to a holiday party you’re hosting which could be a great opportunity to introduce colleagues to new contacts.
  • Invite your recipient to connect over coffee, “this year just flew by! We should catch up over coffee.”
  • Send a little gift, especially if they’ve helped you with past opportunities this year. Gift cards and sweet treats are always a hit.

Tip 3: Use Down Time to Your Advantage

If the holiday season is a slow season at work, use that extra downtime to your advantage and amp up your job application strategy.

Leverage this season to update your resume, work on your social media presence, and attend workshops or online classes to brush up/ learn a new skill.

Job hunting around the holidays doesn’t have to be grueling. After all, this season is all about gathering and connecting. With luck, you’ll be starting the new year with a new opportunity.
