Ever wondered how a temp role could lead to a career in an area you would not normally consider? Jessica Pike shares her story on how a temp placement some years ago has had a long lasting effect on her occupation, studies and passion. We are so very proud of her accomplishments.
Tell us a bit about yourself, and what your current role involves.
I work in ICT procurement at Suncorp (my role is Software Procurement Leader) and I have been in ICT procurement for just over 8 years doing various things. Now I’m in the category management/sourcing side which means my day-to-day is mostly running tenders & drafting/negotiating contracts which suits me to a tee.
How did you end up in Procurement?
I’ve been asked a bunch of times why I chose procurement and I always have to tell people I didn’t choose it, I just fell into it when Suzie sent me on a 3 month temp contract – where I ended up staying more than 5 years!
I was only a few weeks out of high school when I started with Majer and had no idea what I wanted to do. Now I’m 8 years in, half way through my second degree and I’ve definitely found my passion.
What do you see as two benefits of working from home in the current climate?
1) I get to spend more time at home with my family (boyfriend and fur kids haha).
2) I feel like everything has slowed down a little, I’m not rushing from home to work, to the gym, to the supermarket, and back home every day. It’s nice to have a little more time in the day.
What is the best career advice you have received?
Don’t undersell yourself.
(I’ve heard this a few times especially when I’ve applied for new roles that were a step up from where I was).
